UPDATED, 10/6: This week's homework: Comment here!

UPDATE:  A few people have written in with questions about the assignment, so here's a quick note:

1.  Here's the assignment, from the syllabus:
Choose a local story that’s covered prominently in at least four major outlets on a single day this week
(10/1-10/6). Pick three versions of the story and post your analysis of the strengths and weaknesses
of each one to the class blog by 9 a.m., Thursday October 7. [NOTE THAT THE DEADLINE HAS ALREADY PASSED.]

2. For examples:  Scroll down!  About half the class has already completed this assignment.  (Which was due about 45 minutes ago, BTW.)  If you've written in with questions, you've got until 1 pm today to do the assignment for half credit.

***************************
You're asked to post your homework-- an analysis of three versions of a local story-- on the blog.  But where?  In the comment section for this post!  Have at it.

  1. A women got a hit man to kill her boyfriend because he was cheating on her.

    [WGN]
    http://www.wgntv.com/news/wgntv-murder-for-hire-oct06,0,6285707.story

This story was really short. It just came with the real hard facts. It did not explain too much. I think that it could have been publicised a little more because it is a really good story. This woman is crazy! This article was a little dull.

    [ABC]
    http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local&id=7708474

This article had more information than the WGN article. It was more well-written and it captivated the scene more. I think that they did a good job with this article.

    [FOX]
    http://www.myfoxchicago.com/dpp/news/metro/marciela-arciga-aurora-hired-hitman-kill-boyfriend-20101005

I feel like they somewhat copied what WGN said. It had the same set up and everything. The downfall to this was that. But they did captivate everything that they should have.

  2. Ron Huberman to step down as CEO of Chicago Public Schools.

    Tribune:
    http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/education/ct-met-huberman-20101006,0,187466.story

    Sun-Times:
    http://www.suntimes.com/news/cityhall/2776436,CST-NWS-huberman06.article

    NBC Chicago:
    http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local-beat/Huberman-to-leave-CPS-chicago-public-schools-104404984.html

The strength in the Sun-Times and Tribune articles are the input from various sources. I think quotes in a story from qualified people and relating to the topic only help it.
The strengh in the NBC article is definately the accompanying video, especially since that video is one of the subject of the article.
All articles provide adequate information and detail on the subject at hand.
I do believe that the actual print article from NBC isn't as strong as the Tribune and Sun-Times, simply because not as many sources are quoted or explained.
Also, the NBC article seems quite definate in the leaving of Huberman, while the Tribune and Sun-Times say that he may be leaving, or intends to.
The NBC article also doesn't mention the idea that Huberman is resigning because he doesn't want to serve under another mayor, something the paper articles hint at.
I think this is a strong factor in the Times and Tribune articles because it lets the reader know that there could definately be a lot more coming on this story.

Ultimately though, all three articles do a decent job at portraying the facts.

  3. Family of 'Transformers 3' extra files suit over accident

    Chicago Tribune:
    http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-met-transformers-lawsuit-20101005,0,6846949.story

This article was nicely written in the way that it introduces the woman to the viewer before getting into the main purpose of this story which is the lawsuit. The article clearly describes why the family is filing the lawsuit and how the accident happened. The article provides an update on how the woman is doing as well.
The weakness of this article is that there is no video of the story for those who like to watch their news.

    TMZ:
    http://www.tmz.com/2010/10/05/transformers-3-extra-stunt-accident-victim-lawsuit-paramount-dreamworks-negligence/

This article summarizes the information, while still providing the reader with answers on the suit and her history that led to the accident. I do not see any weakness.

    Chicago Breaking News Center:
    http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2010/10/suit-woman-injured-in-transformers-3-permantly-brain-damaged.html

This article describes mostly what her brother is feeling and how he remembers her. It provides some detail of the suit, but doesn't provide for how much the family is suing. It also updates the reader on her health today. There are pictures of the accident which is also a big plus. A video is also missing of the court case or interview.

  4. A Small Plane Crashes Into a Fitness Building

    [Chicago Tribune]
    http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2010/10/small-plane-crashes-on-top-of-naperville-fitness-center.html

    [CNN]
    http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2010/10/06/small-plane-crashes-in-naperville-illinois/?iref=allsearch

    [FOX NEWS]
    http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/10/06/small-plane-crashes-fitness-center-chicago-suburb/

The Chicago Tribune article gives a lot of the details about the plane crash, including quotes and pictures of the actual crash and the victim in a stretcher.

The CNN article is so small and short that doesn't even offer enough information about who the victims were. (maybe because it hasn't been updated in hours)

The FOX article had more than CNN but was still short with not a lot of information. The article still has DEVELOPING (in red) but still hasn't been updated. Instead, FOX justs puts a another link of the story for people to get more information.

  6. A small plane crashes into a Naperville X-Sport Building

    http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local&id=7709588

The ABC article put their video at the top of the page just in case there are those who don't want to read the article. The video is 3 minutes long (the longest video of the three sites I chose) and basically puts the text in a nutshell. The actual article itself relies on the public's viewing of the event, different people who were located in areas around the crash site. It seems that they put less emphasis on the injuries and more about the plane crashing into the building. This article has the most detail on all the fronts of the story. They cover the crash, reactions and the damage report all in good detail.

    http://www.myfoxchicago.com/dpp/news/metro/plane-hits-naperville-gym-health-club-xsport-fitness-beebe-drive-75th-20101006

What I really like about this one is that there is no video (a definite strength in my opinion), just two pictures of the crash. While the ABC article was probably the most detailed on all fronts of the story the FOX article has information that I did not find on either of the other pages. They mention how some of the neighbors think the aircraft was not a Piper32 but a Beechcraft that was registered to Airplane Holdings Company in Wilmington Delaware. While this is the only information that is different from the rest of the articles it is still something worthy of noting, perhaps FOX was the only news crew to obtain that info?

    http://www.wgntv.com/news/wgntv-small-plane-crashed-xsport-fitness-center-oct5,0,7972903.story

Definitely the weakest of the three articles. First of all it has very sparing details, they tell you it crashed, where they were going, the damage report and then a very brief eye witness account. This video is also shorter than the ABC video but all the details are within the video and not the text. Like I said earlier, the actual text of this article is very little which is really a weakness in my eye. But the video they present does have all the information that should have put in text form as well.

Overall these three articles all touch on the important stuff. The crash itself, the damage report and eye witness accounts. The FOX article probably was the most specific of the three while the ABC article has some detail, but it's broad compared the FOX's. I won't bother mentioning WGNs article because all you really needed to do with that was watch the video, you could easily skip the text and nothing would change.

  7. Emil Jones is no longer running for mayor!

    http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/clout_st/2010/10/emil-jones-says-no-to-mayors-race.html

    http://www.myfoxchicago.com/dpp/news/politics/emil-jones-chicago-mayor-daley-campaign-20101006

    http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/politics&id=7709723

All three articles have the same information, basically, and that amounts to very little. The Tribune article is the only one with a quote directly from Jones, showing that he was never totally into the idea, but was very strongly encouraged to run by those around him; this is a point that the other two articles don't make. The ABC article shows one other reason that Jones gives for not running, that the other two did not; that is, that it would simply take too much time. The Fox Chicago News article has nothing outstanding to offer — no additional details that the others didn't contain, and it is very straightforward and direct. It is short, choppy, and offers little detail or insight. I feel like the other two articles did some job of humanizing Jones.
All three articles are lacking any extensive information.

  8. Chicago's West Side is the Most Dangerous Neighborhood in the USA

    Vocalo Blog:
    http://blogs.vocalo.org/srobertson/2010/10/chicago-in-the-national-news-west-side-most-dangerous-neighborhood-in-us/38868

This article seems like it should be a little more personal because it is covered by a blog that's written here in Chicago. It does cover how Rahm Emanuel will have to take on such a challenge. Other than that, there really is no opinion on whether the neighborhood's title is true or not. The photograph dominates most of this article and kind of makes up for what is left unsaid, showing the darkness and emptiness that the run-down neighborhood has.

    ABC:
    http://abcnews.go.com/Travel/americas-dangerous-neighborhoods-areas-violent-crime/story?id=11803334

This article is more purposeful for its facts about the neighborhood, deeply looking into information of how many violent crimes are predicted per year, the crime rate, and the chances of being a victim of the crime. The first page of the article does mention how this beats Atlanta, for having four of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the country.

    FOX:
    http://www.myfoxchicago.com/dpp/news/metro/west-side-neighborhood-named-most-dangerous-country-chicago-scout-20101005

This article is short and concise, telling readers of the neighborhood's new title and gives warning to the possibilities of becoming a victim of crime. The article also mentions the other dangerous Chicago neighborhood. It also seems to have more detail as to where in the neighborhood is the hot spot for these crimes.

Overall, ABC seems to have good information and comparison. FOX seems to give its viewers a heads-up, as it should as a news source, about where exactly these crimes are being commited. Vocalo just states the facts and comtemplates the future that the mayor will have to deal with, including a great photo. I couldn't say that one of these articles has covered the story better than the other, but they are all convenient and true sources for local news.

  9. Ron Huberman's resignation as CEO of CPS.

    http://www.wbez.org/Content.aspx?audioID=44858

The article written by a radio station is straight-forward and short. In its headline, it states not only the bottom line but the future plans of Ron Huberman before he exits as CEO. The only complaint about the article I have is the audio add-on is word for word with the article. But the I assume the benefit could be you can get the same info from the article just by listening.

    http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/tribnation/2010/10/ron-huberman-is-leaving-cps.html

The Tribune article contains only five sentences (though I understand why because it is a blog) and a video that is very informational. The video claims Ron Huberman is resigning but stresses his departure is not imminent. What backs this statement up is the clip of Ron Huberman stating this. The video is organized in great form but the article needs that info to be attached to it. At first glance, all I see are three sentences and suspect that is all this page has to offer about the headline.

    http://www.suntimes.com/news/cityhall/2776436,CST-NWS-huberman06.article

The Chicago Sun-Times article has all the inside story of this topic. It gives us the back story of what is going on in the education world of today. The article is neatly organized and tells us the facts. Just like the Tribune and the WBEZ articles, it states there Ron Huberman still plans on focusing on the education system even if his resignation is nearing every single day.

    ABC
    http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local&id=7711472
The ABC article was more of a cry for help than a article on what had occurred. This was surprisingly effective, as it was the first article I read it made me wonder what all had happened. In this case, the article perked my curiosity to find out more about the situation. The lack of information is a bit troubling though, I would assume that -generally- people would be interested in what all happened with this little boy.

    WGN
    http://www.wgntv.com/news/wgntv-search-for-missing-toddler-oct7,0,4211943.story
The WGN news story here was a bit lacking in my opinion. 27 seconds of video footage on a story concerning a toddler being -kidnapped- is a sad. I feel more information could have been recovered with a little more effort.

    FOX
    http://www.myfoxchicago.com/dpp/news/crime/dontrell-johnson-father-taken-missing-infant-wont-say-where-20101007
The fox news article provides a bit more background information on what happened. There is more substance for the reader to swallow here, which makes the article more interesting. The same information is given over all, yet with the additional background info we can more easily piece together a picture of what took place.

    "Missing Toddler Found in Lake"

    http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local-beat/Have-You-Seen-This-Missing-Toddler-104483349.html
    (NBC NEWS CHICAGO)
strengths/weaknesses: This article had two quotes, which is good, one from a neighbor and another from the fire department (who helped pull the child out of the water). Another bonus is the fact that two pictures were included within the article. On the negative side, there was one grammatical error. Also, the article failed to illuminate on the relationship between the mom and the dad of the dead child, versus the other articles that did so. Even more, the future legal information concerning the dad wasn't listed, and neither was any future information about the child, (funeral, autopsy date?).

    http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2010/10/officials-child-pulled-from-lake-on-south-side.html
    (CHICAGO BREAKING NEWS)
strengths/weaknesses: This article gave information about who found the child, (some boaters), and where they found him. Also, the article mentioned the relationship between the boy's mom and dad, and hinted on possible motives behind why the dad might have wanted to kill the son. Additionally, future information about the boy's autopsy and the dad's further legal investigation was listed. Two pictures were also added to the article. I didn't find any weaknesses, I actually found this article to be insightful and accurate.

    http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local&id=7711472
    (ABC NEWS LOCAL)
strengths/weaknesses: This article was the only article to get a quote from the child's mother as well as the mother's sister. Also, this article gave some valuable information on the child's rescuers' actions. On the other hand, the article pulls focus too much away from the child and the incident and rather puts said focus on the parents and their relationship. Also, there was no picture.
